Bremen public transport operator Bremer Straßenbahn AG (BSAG) is procuring 50 more electric buses. Mercedes-Benz (EvoBus) has received an order from BSAG for 35 new fully electric articulated eCitaro G buses.
The eCitaro G busses are to be equipped with the latest NMC 3 battery technology, which from next year will supplement the 20 eCitaro solo buses that have been in service in Bremen since 2022.
BSAG is purchasing a further 15 new iebus18 electric buses from the Spanish manufacturer Irizar.
The new eCitaro G articulated buses in Bremen’s fleet run on seven 98.3 kWh battery packs, with 5,400 cells each and a total capacity of up to 686 kWh. This provides the electric buses with a range of 220 kilometres.
Charging of the buses is to take place via five 150 kW charging systems installed at the depot.
The Bremen public transport operator had initially ordered its first five electric buses in 2020, which is also when the charging infrastructure was commissioned.
The company had also considered purchasing buses with a hydrogen-fuel-cell range extender at the time, however it appears that the Bremer Straßenbahn opted for battery-electric variants instead.
