The Volkswagen Group handed over 141,000 BEVs to customers worldwide in the first quarter of 2023. Compared to the same period last year, which was more affected by supply bottlenecks, the group’s BEV deliveries rose by 42 per cent.

In the first quarter of 2022, VW delivered 99,200 BEVs as reported. With the 141,000 vehicles now delivered, the BEV share of total deliveries climbed to 6.9 per cent, up from 5.2 per cent in the first three months of last year, according to VW.

Europe was the biggest growth driver with a 68 per cent increase to 98,300 vehicles. The BEV order book in Western Europe stands at more than 260,000 vehicles. The second largest BEV market after Europe for the Group was China, where 21,500 e-cars (or 15 per cent of global BEV deliveries) were handed over to customers.

The USA came in third with a share of eleven percent or 15,700 vehicles. Especially in terms of the number of e-vehicles, VW in the USA was able to almost double the result from the same quarter last year.

Broken down by brand, the VW passenger car brand accounted for 70,000 BEVs, almost half of the 141,000 electric cars. Audi accounted for another quarter with 34,600 vehicles.

They are followed by Skoda (12,400 vehicles, 9 percent group share), Seat/Cupra (9,200 vehicles, 6 percent), Porsche (also 9,200 vehicles, 6 percent) and VW Commercial Vehicles with 5,500 vehicles and a group share of 4 percent.

At Porsche, Taycan production continues to suffer from supply bottlenecks, which is why Porsche is the only passenger car brand in the Group to be slightly in the red in Q1, with deliveries down 3.4 per cent. At VW Commercial Vehicles, on the other hand, the start of deliveries of the ID. Buzz is noticeable: Here, deliveries went up year-on-year from 700 to 5,500 units.

In terms of models, the VW ID.4/ID.5 duo came out on top in the first quarter with 41,900 units. Second place went (just) to the VW ID.3 (23,600 deliveries) ahead of the Audi Q4 e-tron (including Sportback) with 21,300 units.

Since Skoda currently only offers the Enyaq and its coupé offshoot as BEV models, all 12,400 deliveries are accounted for by this model series. The Audi e-tron and Q8 e-tron (also including the Sportback) are in fifth place with 9,700 vehicles.

“We started the year on a sound footing for all-electric vehicles with a 68 percent increase in Europe and double the number of vehicles delivered in the USA.At the Shanghai Auto Show this week, we demonstrated how we are responding to the challenges we face in this segment in China, and in March we already saw sales there increase year-on-year,” said Hildegard Wortmann, member of the so-called Extended Group Management for Sales.

“The Volkswagen ID.7, which has just been unveiled, will give us further tailwind in all core markets. We will keep our sights on our ambitious goal of BEVs accounting for around one in ten vehicles delivered globally to customers this year.”
