UK infrastructure provider Gridserve has opened the first charging site at a garden centre in Swindon in the Southwest of England.

The opening comes two years after a corresponding partnership agreement, but Gridserve says “plenty more will sprout up”.

And they should, referring to the initial deal made in late 2021 when Dobbies Garden Centres expected Gridserve to build 30 charging hubs at car parks across the UK and Northern Ireland.

While it is unclear what took them so long to open, one other promise appears in line with the specs released today.

The new site in Swindon offers parking and charging of up to twelve electric vehicles; however, slower than expected.

There are just two high-power chargers next to five Medium Power chargers.

The latter comes with two plugs per column and offers CHAdeMO and CCS connections.

Gridserve calls the type of charging site an Electric Retail Hub.

This is in addition to the motorway-based Electric Super Hubs and the company’s large Electric Forecourts.

Partner Moto and Gridserve claim they have delivered 320 charge points at the Super Hubs, including 142 HPC points across 18 locations since 2021.

As for Dobbies Garden Centres, Gridserve has yet to disclose a more detailed timeline for future installations.
